Open Source
Open source describes practices in production and development that promote access to the end product's source materials. Some consider open source a philosophy, others consider it a pragmatic methodology. Open source code evolves through community cooperation that includes very large companies. Examples of open source software include Google's Android, Linux, Eclipse, Open Office, Symbian, Firefox, Mediawiki, Worldpress and many others.
The desktop edition of the Amanzi Wireless Explorer (AWE) is open source available without per user licensing price, no vendor lock-in and absolute flexibility. Out of the box it already contains advance features and functionalities a network professional need for performance management, configuration management and optimization. AWE is available for customization to every need and requirement of a network professional. The users do not need to be software developers or programmers to get their work done, rather AmanziTel provides AWEScript, a 'domain specific language' designed specifically for network professionals and engineers
The Wireless Explorer is based on the Eclipse platform from the Eclipse foundation. Eclipse is an open source community, whose projects are focused on building an open development platform comprised of extensible frameworks, tools and runtimes for building, deploying and managing software across the lifecycle. The Eclipse Project was originally created by IBM in November 2001 and supported by a consortium of software vendors. An important aspect of Eclipse is the focus on enabling the use of open source technology in commercial software products and services.
Eclipse is a collection of open source projects built on the Equinox OSGi run-time. Eclipse started as a Java IDE, but has since grown to be much, much more. Eclipse projects now cover static and dynamic languages; thick-client, thin-client, and server-side frameworks; modeling and business reporting; embedded and mobile.
